Welcome to the GCBC Learn to Sail program run at Guelph Lake. Each summer we get students from all ages learning to sail on the warm waters of Guelph Lake. We have been hosting Learn to Sail programs for youth and adults at our club for over 8 years. Guelph Lake is a great venue for beginner sailors and experienced sailors alike. Our goal is to introduce sailors in the Guelph area to the sport of sailing and to foster a lifelong love of sailing. We encourage participants to join the club and continue sailing and racing with our members. Our programs are run according to guidelines established by the Canadian Yachting Association. Sailors who complete our programs are capable of dinghy sailing at any facility in the world. For complete Learn to Sail program descriptions, please visit the Canadian Yachting Association at www.sailing.ca.
This program is designed as a gentle introduction to sailing for children aged 7-9. The program is a combination of sailing and land-based activities. Learning in a safe and fun environment is our main consideration. Participants use the Optimist dinghy, a very small and stable, single sailboat. White Sail I, II and III White Sail programs are geared to sailors over the age of 9. This program introduced the basic skills of sailing, including safety, seamanship and boat handling. Through the three level program. White Sail I Skills White Sail II Skills White Sail III Skills Bronze IV and V The Bronze program is geared towards sailors who would like to learn more advanced sailing techniques. Sailors should be physically strong enough for higher winds and the more advanced skills taught at this level. Some of the skills include sail trim, boat tuning, boat maintenance, trapezing and use of the spinnaker. The 420 dinghy is used for this program. Bronze IV Skills Bronze V Skills
Youth Regatta At the end of the season, all youth participants are encouraged to attend our Learn to Sail Regatta. This is an afternoon of sailing games and races followed by a potluck family barbecue. Please plan to attend 2008 date to be announced! Adult Programs We offer White Sail programs to adult participants who would like to either learn to sail or improve their skills. Lessons are offered either in weekend sessions or weekday evenings. Our Instructors The instructors at the Guelph Community Boating Club are highly qualified individuals who can provide a safe and fun environment for instruction. They have completed instructor qualifications according to the Canadian Yachting Association. These qualifications include NCCP coaching certification, Bronze Cross minimum swimming, Pleasure Craft operators card, Bronze V sailing and First Aid, as well as the completion of the Instructor course itself.
